Structure
Studies last three semesters, which include the preparation of the master thesis. All courses are compulsory and each corresponds to five credits (ECTS).
- Total programme: 90 ECTS
- 1st and 2nd semester: six courses per semester, 30 ECTS per semester
- 3rd semester: two courses (10 ECTS) and the master thesis (20 ECTS), 30 ECTS in total
- Maximum time for completion of studies: twice the normal duration
- Language of teaching: Greek and/or English

Master thesis
By the end of the 2nd semester, each student selects the topic of the master thesis and the supervising professor, from a published list of topics. The topic falls within the subject areas of the courses of the Programme and the assignment is submitted to the Secretariat using the relevant form, signed by the supervisor. The assignment is approved by the Department Assembly.
- Examination committee: three members, comprising the supervisor and two further members of the teaching staff with the same or a related specialisation.
- Presentation: an oral presentation before the three-member committee, at the end of the January, June and September examination periods.
- Time limit: twelve months from the approval of the topic, with the possibility of an extension of up to one year, without exceeding the maximum period of study.
- Change of topic: possible within four months of its approval, by decision of the Department Assembly and on the reasoned recommendation of the supervisor. It does not entail any extension of the deadlines.
- Language of writing: Greek or English. Another language is possible by agreement with the supervisor and with the approval of the Department Assembly.
- Assessment: the thesis is judged to be acceptable, acceptable after amendments, or to be rejected. In the latter two cases the student improves it and it is re-examined. An acceptable thesis is graded from 5 to 10.
- Publication: after its approval it is compulsorily posted on the website of the School and in the Institutional Repository of Scientific Works (IKEE) of the University of Western Macedonia.
Responsibility for the writing lies with the student. Plagiarism is defined as the partial or complete copying or use of the work of another, whether published or not, without precise and clear reference to the source, as well as the quotation of material, even from the student’s own earlier work, without corresponding reference. It constitutes a serious academic offence and, in a substantiated case, the Department Assembly may decide on permanent removal from the Programme.
Rules of writing
- Referencing and bibliography system: APA.
- Images, tables and diagrams: numbered, with a caption and a reference to the source where they are not original.
- Formatting: Times New Roman, Calibri or Arial typeface (16 pt bold for chapter headings, 14 pt bold for section headings, 12 pt for the text, 12 pt italic for subsections), 1½ line spacing, justified alignment.
- Numbering: lower-case Roman numerals for the preliminary parts and Arabic numerals for the main text, with page numbers at the bottom right.
- An abstract in Greek and in English, of up to 350 words, with 3 to 5 keywords.
- Footnotes used sparingly, only for supplementary material; endnotes are not permitted.
